Dulwich International High School Suzhou is full of extraordinary, passionate, and dedicated students with incredible talents and skills in all areas!
In the Music Department, we are incredibly fortunate in that regard!
Since the start of the term, the rounds and heats of this competition have been running quietly in the background with excitement building toward the finals.
The second annual Young Musician of the Year Competition celebrated its final round on Wednesday October 26, with one student from each year group competing for the 2022 title.
The competition opened with a performance by last year’s winner, Mia D from the current Year 11, who once again delighted audiences with her mesmerizing display on the guzheng.
These talented and hard-working students have shared their musical accomplishments with us in the form of incredible solo performances, and we were impressed to see high levels of musicianship and passion across all year groups!
Only one exemplary performer from each year group was selected to advance to the final round. Our finalists this year were all outstanding pianists:
Year 13 - Molly Y
Year 12 - Ray W
Year 11 - Zixuan W
Year 10 - Jack S.Q
After much deliberation and some tough decisions, we awarded first place to Zixuan W from Y11, for his brilliant piano performance of Debbussy's Deux Arabesques, L. 66 No. 1 in E major. Andantino con moto.

It has been an honor to be able to participate in this competition, and I think it was me just being lucky on that day. All of us did well, and the music coming from my classmates was mind-blowing.
Before I went on the stage, I was indeed nervous, even though I have experience playing in competitions. However, when I sit in front of the piano, I put everything behind me, focusing only on my hands, enjoying the moment that I have on the stage. That moment belongs to me.
The piece that I played in the finals I had already practiced for 2 years. It is one of my favorite pieces of music. It sounds simple; however, mastering all the detail is difficult. I like the dynamic change and the layer of different melodies of that piece of music, just beautiful.
I’m a boarding student, and I thought about dropping because I believed there was no place for me to practice, but I was wrong. Our school has 4 practice rooms available for students who need to continue to pursue their passion in music. Our music department will do everything to support us in continuing to walk this path.
