All students taking Mathematics, Economics, or Science subjects should have a scientific calculator. We recommend the Casio fx-999 or Casio fx-991 models. Students must bring their own calculators to all assessments and examinations. 

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) 

What essential device should I bring to school? 

To support full access to learning, it is expected that every student enrolled at DHSZ will have an essential device that they bring to school daily and that meets the ‘Device specifications’ below. 

Small tablets are not suitable as essential devices (iPads, etc). 

Mobile phones are not allowed between 07:50 and 16:30. Mobile phones should be switched off during the school day. 

Using social media, WeChat, or gaming, will lead to the immediate confiscation of devices. 

Students are responsible for taking care of their devices, not leaving them unattended (except for in locked lockers), charging before class, and keeping relevant software up to date. Families are recommended to purchase relevant insurance for loss or damage. 

To ensure good digital habits, parents should partner with the school to manage appropriate device use, for example registering device details for boarding students. It is recommended that parents consider appropriate parental control software and monitoring of device use, based on the needs and age of the student, such as Microsoft Family Center. 

Students will be required to sign an ‘acceptable use policy’ for technology each year, and our Lifeskills curriculum will include E-Safety and digital citizenship elements. Any breach of the acceptable use policy will lead to serious consequences.

Device Specifications 

Minimum device requirements: 

• Windows 11 or MacOS 15: 
• 8 GB RAM 
• 256 GB storage 
• Intel i5 processor or equivalent 
• Camera for video conferencing and taking photos of work 
• At least 12.5-inch screen 
• Full-sized keyboard with keys that move 
• Headphones and microphone 

Additional highly recommended device requirements: 

• Rear and front cameras 
• 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage, particularly for Art, Computer Schience and Music students 

Examples of devices NOT meeting the minimum requirements: 

• Microsoft Surface Go 
• Windows on ARM devices 
• iPad mini, iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro 
• ChromeOS devices 
• Gaming desktops/laptops are not allowed on campus. 
• Mobile phones 
• Android devices 
• Anything without a full-sized keyboard with keys that move 

"Just tell me what to buy!"

Whilst the school does not recommend or require any one brand: 

• iPads or other tablets are not recommended under any circumstances. 
• iPads, tablets, or gaming laptops are not suitable for school. 
• For students not studying art or music, popular devices include the above devices or a mid-range Windows Surface laptop. 

For students studying art, a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with Adobe Creative Cloud is required. An iPad is not suitable. Graphic design students will need access to Adobe software, including Creative Cloud apps such as Photoshop. 
For students studying music (but not art), a popular device is a mid-range 14” or 16” MacBook Pro. This is due to the use of Apple's Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software, Logic Pro X, and a free notation software, Musescore, which is required for students to fulfill their coursework. MuseScore is also available on Windows laptops, but not iPads.
