Entering an international essay competition about sustainability can be a valuable and rewarding experience for students interested in improving their English and making a difference in the world. Sustainability is a complex topic, but with the right resources, guidance, and motivation, it can be more accessible and easier to understand. Students received some support in their Y10 lessons to plan an outline for their essay and were then asked to write it in their own time. Eight students were selected from DHSZ for the quality of their essays.

Here are some of the main benefits of entering an international essay competition about sustainability:

Increased awareness and knowledge about sustainability

By entering an essay competition, participants are required to research and explore various topics related to environmental protection and sustainable development. This way, they get to learn about resources conservation, natural resource management, climate change, green economy, and many more aspects of sustainability. Therefore, those who participate in these competitions get to develop their communication skills as well as create a well-rounded argument for their case.

International essay competitions bring together people from different parts of the world to discuss a common theme. Participants in such competitions get an opportunity to interact with peers from different backgrounds, cultures, and worldviews. It exposes them to ideas and perspectives they might not have considered before, which helps to broaden their understanding of the topic. This exchange allows them to gain knowledge around differing practices in other countries and how the implementation of sustainability could be replicated in their own country.

Recognition and rewards

International sustainability competitions offer various rewards and recognition opportunities to successful participants. Some awards come in monetary prizes and scholarships, while others include certificates, medals, and other memorabilia. Participating in such competitions can also be included in university applications, CVs and employment records, thereby enhancing their profiles, and may increase their chances of being recruited into new roles and opportunities.

Making a positive impact on the world

Finally, entering an international essay competition about sustainability offers the chance to make a meaningful impact on environmental issues. By participating in essay competitions, people can contribute to the knowledge base in environmental preservation and help to inspire and create important dialogue for wider implementation of sustainability efforts. In today's climate, it is more important than ever that we focus on the future of the world as we know it, and these competitions are a great starting point for this.

Mr Luke Webb said he was very pleased with the outcome of the competition, with honourable mentions in the first year we have submitted entries from DHSZ. The students have been asking me for months if they received any prizes and to be able to share in the students’ success is a great feeling. I hope the process has helped them to feel empowered and that they can make a change. Having spoken to some of the University counsellors, it also supports their university applications as they have something else that sets them apart from others.

Congratulations to the following students from DHSZ who received ‘honourable mention’ certificates. These students were recognised by the judges for writing a well-written essay. An 'honourable mention' is special praise given to someone who has done something extremely well but who has not won any of the main prizes. In the TSL essay this is given  Please join us in celebrating these awards with our students.
