She is full of diversity, like the shining sun
"A person is like a white cloud. Whenever this person is illuminated by beautiful things, he/she becomes a shining sun." After interviewing Michelle, we thought of such a sentence.
What kind of person is she? Enthusiastic, confident, with a wide range of interests, she dares to challenge and is full of leadership qualities. Within an hour of the conversation, we put a lot of labels on Michelle. She also said: "in addition to the good results, if there is any part about me that helped me to be accepted by NTU, it is probably my diversity."
Michelle L said that since childhood, what she likes most is to try all kinds of new things, and her hobbies are probably too much to count. In art, dance is her favourite. Fine art, music and performance are also the seasonings in her ordinary life. In sports, besides common ball games and swimming, she is also good at challenging sports like riding, diving and rock climbing.
Michelle, who has been practising dance for ten years, is proficient in many kinds of dance. She not only participated in the "Suzhou Spring Festival Gala", but also founded a dance club in Dulwich International High School Suzhou. As the club leader, she led the members to arrange and practice dance. She likes to perform and loves to be on stage. She stood out in her interview and became a member of the Shakespeare drama club team, the hottest club in Dulwich International High School Suzhou. She also participated in Dulwich’s swimming team and javelin team. She once broke three school records in the school sports meeting and won the title of "best female athlete".
"Fortunately, I chose to come to Dulwich and it gave me such a stage. In fact, early in junior high school in the Chinese school system, I found that I was different from some of my classmates. I didn’t like to let all my energy be used up in class. I needed to leave some time for what I like to do. In Dulwich, academic achievements are important, but personal abilities such as sports and arts are also valued. "Michelle said that it is a variety of learning in life and challenges that make her who she is today.
In Michelle's view, peers are also a key link in helping her to grow up: "although I used to like dancing, I sometimes get tired of repeated practice, and I don't feel confident when I encounter unfamiliar dance styles. However, when I practice with excellent peers in the club, I release pressure and gradually improve my self-confidence. For another example, although I am good at painting, I always copy more than I create. Seeing classmates’ independent design and innovative ideas in the school's art curriculum always gives me a lot of inspiration."
In Dulwich International High School Suzhou, charity activities are also "required courses" for students. Michelle told us that before she took part in the school's monthly charity activities, she always felt that charity was nothing more than donating money and materials.
"I didn't know more about charity until I took part in the monthly plan and went to a school for children of migrant workers in Mudu, teach them musical instruments. Under the organization of the school, all of us must participate in the rally to raise money and then teach the children with carefully prepared content. ”Since then, Michelle said, she has focused on co-curricular charity activities.
In the summer vacation of her second year at high school, she and her friends went to Mount Chiang Rai in Thailand to promote and publicize a local coffee shop. Michelle told us that she takes business as her future learning goal, and the promotion and marketing for coffee shops is just in line with her professional field. In addition, she loves coffee so much that she didn’t hesitate to go.
On a hot summer day, Michelle and her friends lived in a crowded room. They had no bed and lied on the floor. At night, electricity often failed.
In the beginning, Michelle was still experiencing life with the mood of "doing activities". Gradually, she decided to really help: "in Thailand, the Akha people are discriminated against. We found that the owner of the coffee shop was constantly providing jobs for the Akha people, and seemed to be saving the people in their own way. So later, I was responsible for the online promotion of this coffee shop. In addition to advertising on Instagram and Facebook, I also studied the original coffee making process and then discussed with my team partners to market it as a "hot spot" so that more tourists can learn about it. "
It is such a shining girl who has won the favour of New York University. Recalling the day when she got the offer, Michelle said: "at that time, I stayed up until 2 a.m. in order to wait for the announcement, but eventually I fell asleep. When I woke up at 5 o'clock, I saw that two classmates had already shared the good news on their WeChat moments. I was nervous and excited when I checked. I didn't dare to confirm it! Now thinking back, I have lived up to my efforts. "

On the same day, we interviewed Charles J, a lovely student at our school who was also admitted to New York University. Unlike Michelle, who is outgoing and lively, Charles is a little introverted and shy, but he loves to laugh very much. Looking at him, you get the impression that something good is about to happen!
During our conversation, Charles told us that he once attended summer school at Columbia University in the City of New York. He liked New York very much, especially Manhattan, which is prosperous, convenient and close to Wall Street, the world's financial centre. "I chose NYU partly because I like Manhattan," Charles said. The school is in the centre of the city. In the future, whether it is daily life or internship work, it will be quite convenient. I chose the major of data science because I like computers, mathematics, and economics very much. Data science is involved in these three disciplines. "
However, in contrast to Michelle’s nervousness and excitement, Charles was very optimistic about his admission result: "I stayed up until 3 a.m. to inquire about the admission information in real-time, but in fact, I was quite calm after finding out the results because no matter what, I was destined to get a place that belonged to me, but I would be happier if it was New York University."
He is a quiet personality with quiet hobbies. His favourite is photography.
In the busy streets, the long exposure method is used to reflect the light and shadow in the flow; in the corner of the ancient temple, the camera frame is used to fill a picture full of Zen; in the deep narrow lane, the frame is the same old city flavour…
"In fact, I like photography because I always have a lot of strange ideas. Because I am introverted, photography can be regarded as a way to express my feelings and ideas. My favorite photos are street views, food and temples. I think every photo taken is a kind of cultural record. " Charles said that his mobile phone and computer photo albums are already full of photos. Taking photos with him is the best way to carry memories and save pictures. It's also a hobby that he has insisted on for a long time and will stick with.
There is always a person or a face that you want to record, which is difficult to describe in a few paragraphs. There is always a street or a hill that you want to keep, which is difficult to describe with a few brushes. Photography can, it can also change the way you look at the world and ignite your passion for life.
Charles tells us that at Dulwich International High School Suzhou, students are constantly improving themselves through a variety of co-curricular activities and social experience projects. He has also participated in many meaningful activities.
Word, Excel, PowerPoint and so on are all indispensable learning and teaching tools for teachers and students. But they can be inconvenient to use. Charles, who studies computer science, has created a series of video tutorials with his partners to help teachers and students improve their efficiency.
"Because many of the tutorials that can be found on the Internet are lengthy, or the language is obscure. They are written for software designers, and they are not practical. That's why we want to make an easy to understand tutorial so that we can get twice the result with half the effort when using it. ” In addition to tutorials, Charles and his partners often share common shortcuts to help people be more efficient.
Influenced by the concept of cultivating "global citizens" on campus, the students at Dulwich International High School Suzhou attach great importance to socialization. Charles and his classmates also carried out the activity of "efficient use of technology" in Dulwich College Suzhou. They competed in learning and memorizing English words using both iPad and paper and used the course to guide the lower grade students to learn the graffiti function on iPads.
From the background investigation to the experimental control design, and then to the competition process and tutorial teaching, all members of the team are responsible for their own. After the event, the project also received strong support from Dulwich College Suzhou.
"Many of Dulwich’s activities are inherited. For example, our charity activities, the design and production of 3D printed prosthesis for disabled children in Guizhou mountainous areas, have been carried out by senior student."
According to Charles, for each disabled child, their team makes one-to-one customization to match the specific parameters of each person. It often takes a long time to design and print. But if they can help others in their lives, there will be a sense of achievement and satisfaction that is difficult to put in words.
