Wuhan fundraising, the shining point of charity Road

During the epidemic, Katherine responded bravely. At a time when the epidemic situation in Wuhan was very serious, she was worried about her friends there. She learned from them that donations to Wuhan were of little significance at that time, but the materials were extremely scarce.

In the emergency situation during the spread of the epidemic, the time had become the most precious thing. Katherine spent only one and a half days going from the idea to its concrete implementation. As the initiator of the activity’s core idea, Katherine said modestly: "I just helped to contact the students from Duke University in Kunshan and helped to publicize it."

Katherine has been involved in charity activities indirectly since junior high school, such as teaching in schools for migrant children in and around Suzhou. After entering Dulwich in high school, Katherine continued her charity career with sincere enthusiasm. In her third year in Dulwich, Katherine took her younger brother and younger sister to do some charity activities. She used her accumulated network resources to teach them how to plan, publicize and make the charity activities bigger, letting more people know that charity is a meaningful thing.

Just like the Wuhan fundraising event, after learning about the serious epidemic situation in Wuhan, students in the Ripple Charity Project (where Katherine is a member) contacted her to do a fund-raising activity, so they went to discuss how to implement it. When they encountered difficulties in the implementation process, Katherine also contacted her classmates in Kunshan Duke University to solve the difficulties. "In fact, I also wanted to train them, so that the ripple charity can continue after I graduate,” Katherine said.

Katherine's love of charity and her many charity activities has also affected the younger generation of students. Wuhan fund-raising activities may be the end of Katherine's charity activities in her high school career, but at the same time, has set the direction that the younger students in the ripple charity group will strive for. This is also the baton of charity inheritance, which reflects the spirit of charity inheritance of Dulwich International High School Suzhou.

Charity: the road of charity is blocked and long

One of the highlights of Katherine's charity activities is the "ripple charity disco". It is the most impressive activity in Katherine's high school career. This is the first activity independently held by Katherine as a leader. The inexperienced youngsters kept exploring with sincere enthusiasm. They had to deal with everything from determining the theme of the activity, to tea breaks, arranging venues, lighting, and hosting. However, the cooperation between students and teachers gave Katherine a lot of confidence. In her opinion, it's a long process.

When it comes to the inspiration of the original event, Katherine described it as "a flash of light" because no one had ever thought of integrating disco with charity dance. One was disco, which was noisy and lively, and the other was a deep and quiet charity dance. The collision between the two became Katherine's "ripple charity disco ", her unconventional ideas, wild thinking, is actually an innovation in deep thinking about the charity she loves.

But the youth always face difficulties. Katherine met the problem that she had always been afraid of. Before the activity started, Katherine made an appointment with her PE teacher for rehearsal. However, due to the rain on the afternoon of the activity day, the students' PE class could only be conducted indoors. Katherine was a bit at a loss, but she only gave herself 10 minutes, and then she quickly recovered, they moved the equipment to the hall for assembly together with the students. The teachers all came to help them. At last, the students grasped the time for rehearsal, and the activity was successfully completed. After one semester's preparation, it took ten minutes to collapse. However, Katherine afraid of difficulties.

The “Ripple Charity disco" eventually raised 20000 donations. Katherine cooperated with the social charity Qingniao student association and donated to two students. After donating, Katherine often contacted the staff of the Qingniao student association to learn about the learning situation and daily life of the recipients. Katherine's humanistic care for the donors shows that charity is not a show but is sustainable. She ignites the torch of kindness, and the people who are rescued by it see the flame of hope.

In her view, this is not only a charity event but also a witness to her ability to help others. "Charity is not a fixed concept. This activity has changed my concept of charity and will make me feel more confident with charity activities."

Find what you love and become your strong point

Speaking of Dulwich International High School Suzhou, Video Challenge was an important part of Katherine’s high school experience for four years.

Video challenge is a film evening party and has been a tradition at Dulwich since 2015. It is an activity independently planned by students. It is completed by students themselves from planning to a video presentation. It provides a good opportunity for students to show their shooting and photography skills as well as their scriptwriting, performance and production ability.

In her first year in Dulwich, Katherine began to make her first film. Every year, she made one film after another. In the second year of Dulwich, she won the "best actor" award. Her proudest moment was winning a gold award in a creative competition, the "BowSeat Ocean Awareness Creative Contest" and won a $1500 award.

Katherine is very interested in award-winning short films. She tells a lot of stories about film making. As a child, Katherine liked watching movies very much. Her perspective is very unique. "Every time I see a shot, I will think about how to shoot this view". Maybe it is this kind of constantly exploring mentality that makes her more and more passionate about films. For her, a film is "The critical point between reality and fiction that allows people to turn ideas into reality."

In order to make her film, she invited three students to make the film together. This is their main creative team. During the shooting process, Katherine was most impressed by the collision of ideas and inspiration when they were shooting in a small house on Shantang Street. They wanted to shoot through a window, so the scene inside could be filmed from outside, but the drone was too noisy and would have disturbed the residents nearby. Katherine communicated with the nearby residents, and finally agreed to spend no more than ten minutes shooting the scene they wanted.

Even on the plane to take the SAT exam in North America, Katherine never forgets her own movie. When she looked down from the plane, she saw a vast ocean and felt that it was very suitable for her film. She immediately took out her mobile phone and filmed it. Finally, this scene was cut into her movie.

Love and persistence are indispensable. Katherine's love for movies has become something she wants to insist on.

Find what she loves and become her strength·Drama

"Drama is something I've always loved." One of the main reasons why Katherine chose Dulwich international high school Suzhou was the tradition of the Shakespeare Festival and the teaching of drama courses.

Drama class is one of the characteristic courses of Dulwich international high school Suzhou. The annual Shakespeare Festival is also one of the most anticipated activities for students. As a traditional interschool activity, the Shakespeare festival invites students from Dulwich schools in Beijing, Shanghai and other places to perform drama every year, and the annual Shakespeare Festival is held by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s professional performers, so the students had great enthusiasm for the drama performance.

When she first entered Dulwich international high school Suzhou, Katherine was not a confident girl, but she was deeply in love with drama. In the first year of entering the drama club, Katherine was not very confident for casting in “Shakespeare’s As You Like It”, but to her surprise, she was selected as supporting female. After that, she performed “Shakespeare’s As You Like It” for three days in school. Later, they performed in Dulwich College Shanghai where the drama festival was held.

It is an excellent opportunity to perform in Shanghai, but the opportunity also means that the performance is a great challenge, because Katherine doesn't speak English as her first language, and most of the students in Dulwich College Shanghai have English as their first language. This required Katherine to have professional performance quality on the stage. In the face of such pressure, Katherine, who wanted to perform her favourite drama well, gave a heartfelt performance. The final performance was unexpectedly good. All the Dulwich students who participated in the drama festival were amazed at the performances on the stage and gave them the greatest encouragement with applause.

After this battle, Katherine perfectly interprets a drama in her own unique way, leaving a deep impression on the audience with the tension in her performance. She feels the charm of drama as an art form. When performing on stage, she said, "It was the first time I felt real confidence."

On the afternoon when she came out of Dulwich College Shanghai, Katherine looked up and found that the teacher who taught her drama was standing at the school gate. The figure of the teacher standing there gave Katherine a sense of comfort. The distance of a road and their eyes looking at each other simply but tacitly told a fact: the inheritance of drama. This scene is described by Katherine with a kind of movie romanticism, which is how Katherine views the world. Studying drama at Dulwich High school Suzhou has had a great impact on Katherine's character. When it comes to family and education, Katherine says the key word is "freedom.”

She is free to express her ideas to her parents, "my parents are my friends, and they won't judge me." No matter what Katherine wants to do, make movies, play plays, do charity, her parents are never absent from the wonderful moments of her life.

Katherine is loved by her parents, but she is extremely self-discipline and never puts down her own requirements. Her self-discipline can be seen when the SAT scores are announced. Although her grades have been excellent, she has failed to meet her own standards, so Katherine is very depressed. In order to comfort her frustrated daughter, Katherine's father carries her on his back and carries her back step by step Home, maybe her father's back is too broad and warm, Katherine's heart is quiet.

In such a state of mind and hard work, she focused on one highlight after another until she got an offer from the University. Katherine said her mood was "very calm" because it was expected.

Talking about the reason why she first chose Dulwich international high school Suzhou, Katherine described the following scene. When she was not enrolled at that time, she stood outside Dulwich’s school gate and saw a senior student in Dulwich school uniform get out of a taxi and walk towards the school gate. After four years of Dulwich’s education, Katherine has gained a lot. At school, she has like-minded friends and teachers who guide her forward. "There was a film before, I asked Mr. Muralee, a physics teacher, to play a role. The teacher was very serious about the performance. He always sent me an email to check the lines of the play. He even talked to me about the lines when he was drinking coffee." Katherine was deeply impressed by his earnest and unremitting attitude. During her four years in Dulwich, Katherine was "on the right path all the time" with the help of her teachers. She was very glad to know these friends and teachers.
