Open Class: Experiential Learning in SE21

SE21

STEAM/SE21 is one of the key components of Dulwich’s holistic education, as well as a project that spans design and science disciplines. Today, our open class series takes you into our school's SE21 classroom with Mr Don Socorro, to unveil its mysteries!

 About SE21

In SE21, the "S" stands for "STEAM," which includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. The "E" represents entrepreneurship with a focus on environmental sustainability, and "21" pertains to the development of 21st-century skills through learning methods. This multifaceted meaning also illustrates Dulwich's commitment to guiding students to focus on environmental sustainability, nurture an entrepreneurial spirit in students, and emphasise the development of 21st-century skills.

What is the class about?

SE21 is not just another class; it's a journey into the future. It's a project-based course that takes a hands-on approach to introduce STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and entrepreneurial skills crucial for the 21st century. In SE21, students dive into the basic concepts of robotics, the Internet of Things, coding, computer science, electronics, and programming. But it's more than just acquiring knowledge; it's about learning how to apply it in the real world. For example, in today’s class, Mr Socorro will help the students to understand what robotics is, how computer works, and engineering. Students will develop the abilities to build a robot based on the given problem and appreciate the technology around them. SE21 encourages students to innovate, adapt to change, and embrace new technologies. These qualities are indispensable in a constantly evolving job market where the ability to learn and adapt quickly is highly valued.

Teaching Style

The SE21 classroom is a hub of creativity and collaboration. Here, the primary teaching approach is project-based, where students are challenged to tackle real-world problems. Mr Socorro employs innovative techniques that empower students to independently design and code solutions. The result? A dynamic learning environment where student engagement and interaction are at their peak. With a strong emphasis on hands-on experience, SE21 nurtures the problem-solving skills that students will need to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Education Philosophy

SE21's educational approach is guided by the philosophy of experiential learning. Students don't just memorize facts; they learn through doing. Mr. Socorro and his team firmly believe that education should be practical and applicable, preparing students for real-world challenges. This philosophy aligns seamlessly with the broader goal of producing well-rounded, problem-solving individuals who can contribute positively to society. SE21 is not just about academic achievement; it's about personal and professional growth.

Advice from Mr Socorro

For students passionate about SE21, Mr Socorro has some invaluable advice. He encourages them to foster curiosity and actively collaborate with their peers. Embracing resilience in the face of challenges is a must, as these challenges are stepping stones to success. Seeking guidance from teachers and mentors, staying updated on the latest STEAM and entrepreneurial trends, and thinking beyond subject boundaries to tackle complex problems are all key to excelling in SE21. Documenting their work, sharing their knowledge, and participating in workshops and events are excellent ways to expand their horizons. Above all, Mr Socorro emphasises that, “your passion is their greatest asset. You should let it drive your commitment to learning and making a positive impact on your academic and professional journey.”
