The University of California is a popular choice for our students, with 70 students in the class of 2022 applying to UC, alongside other universities. From their applications, we have received 45 offers.

Why are the UCs so popular at DHSZ?

For students of Dulwich High School that have been here 4years, the UCs do not require a TOEFL score. They view our English-medium education as meeting the requirements.

The 9 campuses offer a range of levels from the top ranked Los Angeles and Berkeley through to Merced and Riverside. The range of levels offers all the students a “reach”, “likely” and “safety” school all within one application. This allows students a dream school to aspire to, but also includes balance within their applications.

The holistic style of applications allows our students to shine by giving more room for extra-curriculas and CCAs to be valued in the application.

Why are our DHSZ students so popular at the UCs?

When our counsellors met UC representatives recently, the UC admission officers praised our students’ applications and the level of care that is spent in the applications. They specifically said that the students who applied this year had a wide range of activities/essays that helped the students get excellent offers. 

The range of social and extra-curriculum activities offered at Dulwich High School was also noted – from UKMT and the Biology Olympiad to the Dulwich Medical Program and all the sports teams. This allows the students to show a growth mentality – from joining and trying activities to leading the ones that they have a genuine interest in.

The UCs don’t require Letters of Recommendation, but read every single essay that students write! This makes it crucial that students write excellent essays that are checked by the counselling team. The competition is extremely fierce for the top universities and students need to take university credit summer programs and ACT to remain competitive.

The University of California opened its doors in 1869. Today, the UC system has 9 undergraduate campuses all in the top 10% of the US News Rankings. The UCs offer students an excellent education in some of the most beautiful places in the USA.

With incredible people and a diverse culture and unique views from each college. They have nearly all majors – naturally also are popular for computer sciences but are famous for their progressive and new ever-changing range of programs.

The application process – starts now for Y12s!

While the admission system only opens in October, students in Y12 are now working on the essays (4 essays each with 350words) and preparing the activities. Remember that the admission officers read all the ones from our school – so you have to make it personal and original!

ALL years need to make sure you are doing a range of activities and the right courses (eg science and humanities mixture). These activities are really valued in the application!
