Building Bridges with University Visits @DHSZ

Over the recent weeks, DHSZ has welcomed many universities to campus. This has allowed our counsellors to get valuable information about the admission processes of each college and strengthen our relationships with universities. We have summarized some key points below.

American University Visits：

Rutgers University, University of Tampa, Central Washington University, Baylor university, University of Denver- Colorado and Lafayette College. 

All emphasized the importance of demonstrated interest. Universities are tracking all contacts now and looking at factors like if a student opens university emails, attends webinars, visits the university website, and many other areas. These are used in evaluating an applicant. Students should be engaging with universities as much as possible if they are applying to the United States. 

This tracking can start in the lower years, so it is good to sign up with your school email address to their webinars to fully gain from this.

Art University Visits：

School of the Art Institute of Chicago 

SAIC focused on the portfolio process. One point of emphasis is that portfolio does not need to feature completely perfect pieces of work. They are focused on the process students go through in creating their portfolio. They also emphasized that for SAIC, a student‘s artistic ability is the most important factor in the application, and the early deadline (November 15th each year) is when they give most of their offers and scholarships to students! It’s well worth making sure students prepare their portfolio in the summer to meet this deadline.

Canadian university visits：

University of British Columbia, Calgary University, Western University

University of British Columbia provided particularly useful information that its Okanagan campus is looking to expand its number of students. Students with an interest in UBC should consider applying to this campus.

University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

HKU focused mainly on its Summer Institute. This offers dozens of in person summer programs directly through HKU. Interested students can gain a real sense of life at HKU through attending these courses. HKUST emphasized the application competition and suggested that students should apply through the early round.
