On the 19th of August, a group of returning students delivered four rounds of talks to new Y10s, IG1 and Y11s in the School Library and Lecture Theatre. The School library was honoured to organize and host the event.

So why did our school offer this event to new students?

The lecture talk was intended to help new students develop the skills and knowledge required for them to fit into their new school environment. Returning students also shared their considerable learning experiences with our new students.

The topics ranged from school policies, Co-curriculum activities and how to be a more effective reader and learner. While the presentations started quietly, by the end of the lectures, both the presenters and the audience were more relaxed and interacted with each other during the question and answer sessions. The impact on the presenters was remarkable, as they showcased their outstanding public speaking skills on stage.

Three alumni from Dulwich International High School Suzhou - Teddy W. (Pennsylvania State University, Jenny J. (University of Southern California) and Leo L. (Cambridge University) shared their learning experiences with the new students.

Jenny spoke about techniques for developing close reading skills. Teddy W. discussed how reading promotes philosophical thinking. Leo L. delivered a presentation via video on how two things he had encountered taught him critical thinking skills.

Collectively, the talks gave new students firsthand experiences of how to love books and think independently.  The weekly rehearsals the returning students had with the school librarian Ms Zhao during the summer holidays had clearly paid off!
