Chinese Cultural Celebration

Last year we were delighted to host the first Chinese Cultural Celebration on this campus in celebration of Chinese New Year. Over  400 Year 10 students took part, half from our school and half from three visiting schools -  DCSZ, No. 24 Middle School and Suzhou High School SIP. We were honoured to welcome Principal Zhou from Suzhou High School SIP and teachers from the visiting schools at the opening of our celebration.

The day began with 23 different workshops that covered a wide range of activities, from Chinese calligraphy to olive carving, paper flower making and dumpling making. Friends of Dulwich organised and ran stalls and exhibitons throughout the common areas during the day.

A traditional Chinese lunch was followed by a variety concert of Chinese music and dance in Suzhou High School SIPs auditorium.  Students acted as Masters of Ceremony and did an excellent job of guiding us through the programme - Rainy Z (Year 12); Angel L (Year 11), Rowena Y (Year 11) and Samuel L (Year 13.) Most of the performances were by students of SHS SIP, No. 24 Middle School and our school. There were also two acts by visiting performers: an acrobat and his assistant and two Kun opera singers.

The concert started with a very beautiful song, Jasmine Flower, sung by a combined choir of our students and parents. The soloist was Muriel L in Year 10 and Grace X in Year13 accompanied on piano. The other performers from our school were Bernie Y and Lotus L, who sang a touching duet, Annie Y, who gave a virtuoso performance on the Chinese flute, Lisa S and Nicole Z on the Guqin, and Janice Z who played a stunning piece on the Guzheng. Students from No. 24 Middle School performed a lovely dance and the final performance was a stunning traditional Chinese dance performed by students from SHS SIP.

Thanks go to Ms. Sze-Ying Sim, Ms. Rebecca Dorrington and the VPA team for an excellent concert celebrating Chinese music and dance. Special thanks go to Ms. Chao, in particular, for all the hard work she put into arranging it over several months. Thanks also go to Ms. Christine Jiang and to Principal Zhuang for their work and support, and to Ms. Ng and her team of support staff who always provide such excellent support all the many events we run in this schools.
