Head of Music
Sze-Ying Sim obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and English Literature from the National University of Singapore. However, having been bitten by the performance bug, she became a professional musician after graduation. She then furthered her music studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Composition. While living in the States, Sze-Ying had the privilege of meeting and working with many outstanding musicians. She has played keyboards and the piano in a variety of musical settings ranging from rock bands to jazz trios and has led big bands and jazz ensembles playing her own compositions.
Apart from composing and performing, Sze-Ying also loves teaching and possesses a postgraduate diploma in the teaching of Music and English. She has taught these two subjects for more than ten years and has taught English as a Second Language to students from countries such as Korea, Israel, Japan and Argentina. Sze-Ying is also an experienced curriculum writer, teacher trainer as well as an IB Music examiner; she has conducted teacher-training sessions in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Tianjin and Beijing.
Though originally hailing from Singapore, Sze-Ying has been living and teaching in China since 2000 and considers China to be her second home. When not working, Sze-Ying enjoys working out at the gym, photography, reading Chinese novels (that have been translated into English) and producing her own music.
