Four Students Shine on Global Stage
We are delighted to hear good news came from our art department: four students' art works have been selected in the 100-Country Joint Exhibition that was held at the China National Convention Centre, which often hosts world-class summits. These students have been successfully promoted to the national exhibition as representatives of China. Their outstanding artwork has not only won accolades, but also demonstrated the transformative potential of the arts to address global issues. Let's delve into the stories behind their award-winning creations, as these talented individuals share the inspiration, dedication, and passion that breathed life into their remarkable pieces.
For Freya, the biggest challenge in the process was balancing academics whilecreating. "The time for creating the work just coincided with the ASexams, and the aspect of time allocation and finding creative inspiration mademe anxious. My classmates and I went to discuss these issues, sought someadvice, and adjusted the schedule and plan appropriately at that time. Inaddition, I chose to use ProCreate, which is more convenient and at the sametime less time-consuming, to create my work."
Being awarded has not only strengthened Freya's passion for art, but it has also given her more confidence in her future artistic endeavours. "This award is a great recognition and encouragement for me from the judges and teachers. I feel very honoured and I will continue to work towards my art in the future, keeping my passion and perseverance to continue learning!"
For Ivy, her inspiration came from the fascinating world of Jiangyong Womanese, a unique script created and passed down exclusively by women. She explained, “Jiangyong is a Chinese syllabic epigraph dedicated to the Jiangyong Womanese of Hunan province. Jiangyong Womanese is the only script in the world that exists exclusively for women, created and passed down by women. The women's script represents a desire for education, knowledge and awareness of the world, and corresponds to the United Nations' issue of equal educational opportunities." Although Ivy was pressed for time during her IGCSE exams when she created the piece, her determination and dedication to the creation of the piece allowed her to finish it brilliantly.
Lynn's art explored the dynamic between artificial intelligence and human symbiosis. “My inspiration came from the current popular issue, ChatGPT. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence now, more and more people rely on science and technology. Meanwhile, some people question whether too much reliance on technology will be bad for humanity. With this argument, I created such a painting on the theme of AI and human symbiosis.”
In Lynn's process of creating this artwork, how to make the picture more harmonious became a big challenge. "After my initial ideas, I split the AI man and drew the Earth in the middle, implying that the source of AI's knowledge still relies on humans. The tone of the whole picture is cool, symbolizing the metallic sense of technology.”
Nancy's artwork was motivated by a profound concern for our oceans. “The ocean is an important treasure of nature. We take too much from the ocean, which provides us with various kinds of food, conditions for ships to navigate, and beautiful landscapes for us. However, human beings have not taken good care of the ocean while using it, and it is now facing various problems such as ocean water pollution and the endangerment of marine animals. It is imperative to curb the deteriorating trend of the marine ecosystem, which requires the concerted efforts of everyone. At the same time, this is very much in line with the 14th of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ‘Life below water,’ which calls for the protection and sustainable use of the oceans and marine resources for sustainable development. Therefore, I would like to express the importance of protecting the oceans through my paintings.”
For her, winning this award is an affirmation of her choice to study art as a path that will have a profound impact on her future artistic endeavours, "as it makes me more certain of my original goal of studying art and expressing my inner thoughts through the form of art - to improve various problems in the world. In other words, to use the academic concepts of art to deliver positive and correct messages and advice."
These talented students, through their unique inspirations and artistic expressions, have not only been recognised in the art awards but have also shown their dedication to addressing critical global issues through their art. Their commitment to creating meaningful works that have a positive impact on society, demonstrating the power of art!
