14 Students admitted through Early Decision, and one HKUST offer

Congratulations to our Dulwich International High School Suzhou (DHSZ) students, who have already received over 14 offers through the Early Decision Program for the Class of 2026 at US universities as of 17th December 2021.

Early Decision is abbreviated as ED. As the name suggests, the school decides to accept an applicant early. Unlike ordinary applications, a student can only choose one school to apply for an ED. If they are accepted, they can only accept the offer to enter the school and must withdraw any applications to other schools. Therefore, students who choose to apply for ED normally do so to their first choice.

Mr Steve Hodgkin, DHSZ Head of Counselling said, "Making an ED application is a little bit like getting married to someone in that there can only be one chosen university, no cheating is allowed and the promises are entered into in good faith! A good ED, like a good marriage, should be founded on love and respect. This is what counsellors call ‘fit.’ At DHSZ we teach students the research skills, independent thinking skills and the decision-making ability to know what they want and what they are looking for in a future ED partner. We get to know our students, consider their grades, their CCAs, their interests and their majors. We talk to our parents to get to know them better too. We support our students through the complex process of making their university choices and opening their hearts to tell their stories in their admissions essays. It is through student empowerment and continuous communication with our families that we make these ED matches work and ‘fit.’"

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to the students who have already received these offers:

"When preparing for the ED application, I spent a lot of time preparing for TOEFL and ACT exams and reaching the standards.  Meanwhile, I also did some research on my favorite topics, participated in and led the CCAs, and prepared for the competitions.

Studying at DHSZ makes me arrange my time more rationally.  I made a lot of good friends and was active in the community.  I have developed a good ability of self-study and learned a lot of extra-curricular knowledge.

I would like to advise: do what you want to do, be who you want to be.  If you don't know what to do, have a try. If you don't know what you want to be, have a think.  Keep a good attitude, don't complain, don't be emotional every day, just do your best. "

"I decided to choose history as my program out of my passion for it since my childhood.  When I applied for college, I began to prepare language scores and novel activities in the first two years.  I also participated in many history-related activities. For example, I once founded a school bulletin to write about the unique and important things that happened in "Today in History" twice a week.  At the beginning of the application season, I communicated many times with my counselor, Mr. Coffey, about school selection and the statement.

During my time in DHSZ, I have improved my writing skills (PS: the admissions officer mentioned that he liked my writing works and hoped that I could publish my later creation in the university student newspaper).  Mr. Coffey helped me improve the statement, I revised it at least 6 times before it was perfect.

I suggest that students can decide their program to apply for the university as early as possible when they are in the lower grade. They can choose their program out of their interest.  In this way, they can have more time to plan their CCAs.  It is also necessary to work hard early to achieve excellent grades."

"In order to apply to universities, I started to do my research on universities in Y12 and got the required language scores.  Although there are many universities with high ranking in the US, I believe the best one is the one that really suits me.  At the same time, I am really grateful to my counselor Vivian Liu. With her help, my statement truly embodies my personality.

During the three years in Dwei, I became more and more confident. At DHSZ, I realized that learning is my own business and only by working hard can I achieve the desired results.  Participating in various sports and joint CCAs has brought me a lot of different skills and made me become a student with all-around development.

Studying is important, but we should also allocate our time properly between study and other activities.  Such as participating in sports competitions in our spare time, which can teach us the importance of teamwork and leave us unique memories. When we recall our high school life, it will not only about studying, but also about impressive people and events.  As we master more skilled, we become more confident and happier."

"Hong Kong University of Science and Technology itself enjoys a good reputation in Asia and even the world. In particular, the business and management courses I applied for have close ties with various world-famous enterprises, which can provide better internship opportunities.  In order to prepare for the application, I listened to the guidance, parents and friends around me. Besides, I come from Hong Kong, so I have a deeper understanding of the universities in Hong Kong.  I want to work in the financial and commercial industry in the future, which makes me more determined to choose the business department of HKUST as my goal.

The first semester of Y13 can be a period of intensive preparation for university application. During this time, part of the study time needs to be allocated to the application. Therefore, it is more necessary for junior students to lay a solid foundation in Y10-12, so as to achieve a balance between study and entering a university.  In order to enrich their resume, younger students can participate in more summer school activities. "

We would like to congratulate these 15 outstanding students once again

and give our best wishes for the students awaiting their results!
