DHSZ Delegates Shine at CISSMUN XIII

Recently, a group of our students and teachers attended the CISSMUN in Shanghai. Lawrence Z, our Y13 student, shared his experience on this trip.

Model United Nations (MUN) has been the most demanding yet fulfilling activity I have ever participated in. This year, our school, DHSZ, received an invitation from Concordia International School Shanghai to attend their conference. Alongside students from various international schools, including those from Hong Kong SAR, Mongolia, and Iran, 21 representatives from different year groups in our school participated in the event. It was a significant moment for me and my classmates, Max B, and other Y13 students, as we not only led many junior students in their first-ever MUN experience but also marked our final participation in MUN.

Concordia's conference was the second one held after the pandemic, and it was well-organized with experienced chairs and diligent staff. The conference also featured three insightful speakers who shared their profound perspectives on the theme. Dr. Ivan Willis Rasmussen, an associate professor at NYU Shanghai specializing in US-China relations, Mr. Lee, a Harvard graduate with expertise in international relations, and Mr. Daniel K. Delk, Jr., Deputy Consul General at the US Consulate in Shanghai, delivered enlightening speeches. I had the privilege of asking Dr. Rasmussen some questions regarding his presentation, which enriched my understanding of the topic.

Beyond the conference itself, the most gratifying aspect was witnessing the growth of our junior students. Starting from silently observing on the first day, they gradually gained confidence and showcased exceptional learning and speaking abilities by delivering compelling speeches and posing sharp questions by the third day.

CISSMUN also resumed award presentations for the first time since the pandemic, and I was honoured to receive an honourable mention alongside Felix T in our committee on human rights. It was a validation of our hard work and dedication.

In conclusion, CISSMUN has been the most satisfying experience throughout my nearly 8 years of MUN participation. I have observed junior students transforming into outstanding representatives, and experienced delegates articulating their points eloquently. I am confident that in the post-pandemic era, the future of DHSZMUN will continue to thrive and develop further.
