Humour Meets Heart: The Addams Family Musical
When you're an Addams
You need to have a little moonlight
When you're an Addams
You need to feel a little chill…
With these iconic lyrics setting the tone, our school’s annual musical extravaganza, The Addams Family, took centre stage. This whimsical and humour-filled production brought to life a story that explores themes of love, family, growth, and challenges, leaving the audience both entertained and deeply moved.
The students were led by Ms Katherine Ryan, the Head of Drama, and Ms Jessica Fannon, the Performing Arts Teacher, in the choreography of the entire production. Every detail, from the selection of roles to the plotting, was repeatedly reviewed and carefully polished. Meanwhile, Music Teacher and the Head of Performing Arts Ms Sheree Hollis provided meticulous guidance to the actors on their vocal abilities, ensuring that every note accurately conveyed emotion. She also led the entire chorus group, infusing the musical with moving melodies and songs.
The stage design borrowed heavily from the Broadway production of The Addams Family, creating a spellbinding Gothic aesthetic. Against a backdrop of a moonlit Addams family mansion, towering family trees, and eerie gravestones, the atmosphere was steeped in mystery and allure. As the cast donned their intricate costumes and stepped onto the stage with infectious energy, the audience was transported to a world of enchanting oddities.
In this musical production, the students delivered outstanding performances, bringing the quirky yet heartwarming characters of the Addams Family vividly to life. Gomez and Morticia’s passionate tango showcased their unique and intense love, earning the audience's admiration. The rebellious yet sincere Wednesday stood out on stage, perfectly capturing the struggles and bravery of adolescence as she navigated the conflict between her parents and her love interest. Every determined glance and sarcastic line she delivered resonated deeply with the audience, drawing waves of applause. Meanwhile, Pugsley’s mischievous antics and Uncle Fester’s whimsical "moon-chasing" escapades added unexpected moments of comedy, filling the theatre with joy and laughter.
The skillfully choreographed ensemble singing and dancing further highlighted the production’s humour and warmth. With their hard work and immense talent, the students transformed this eccentric story into a celebration of love and acceptance, creating an unforgettable feast for the eyes and ears.
This musical not only displayed the students’ remarkable artistic abilities but also reflected the collective effort and camaraderie of the entire school community.
From the Students
The musical has always been my favorite activity in school, and I look forward to every rehearsal every week. Singing and dancing together with our members is really fun, and I truly feel that all the cast and crew are like a family. I've gained valuable drama skills from my teachers, who have guided me in developing my character through acting, dancing and singing. They really help me how to better show my role’s character.
Playing the role of Lurch in The Addams Family made me deeply appreciate the mystery of characters. On stage, I tried my best to capture Lurch's every subtle movement and expression, hoping to perfectly present the unique charm of this character. These days, I feel the audience's enthusiasm and love for the role, which makes me feel extremely satisfied and proud. Thanks to this performance, it made me love the theatre even more.
"Being part of The Addams Family Musical has been an incredible and unforgettable experience, especially as it’s my first time participating in a musical. I’ve loved musicals since childhood, and this opportunity feels like a dream come true. In the show, I play the bride ancestor—an ensemble role with few lines but ample opportunity to express myself through body movements and facial expressions. Immersing myself in the character allowed me to let go of others’ opinions and explore my creative side.
"This journey also taught me invaluable lessons about teamwork and collaboration. I realized how crucial each person’s effort is in creating a successful production. Our drama teachers and managers demonstrated the importance of organized leadership, ensuring everything ran smoothly. Their guidance has instilled in me a deep appreciation for structure and cooperation, skills I’ll carry with me beyond this experience. I’m truly grateful for this transformative opportunity."
