Turning Pages, Turning Minds: DHSZ Book Fayre
At the beginning of this term, our school library kicked off a month-long "Reading Streak Challenge" with an engaging literature talk, Read to Succeed. The challenge encouraged students to borrow books that interested them and to track their reading progress with stamp cards. This gradual, structured approach helped students become more confident in selecting and reading books. In the middle of September, the challenge culminated in a vibrant book fayre, where two major book vendors brought a wide range of English books to the school. Students not only enjoyed browsing through the books on offer but also learned how to better choose books suited to their tastes.
The two-day book fayre featured two exciting activities organised by the library:
These activities both provided students with opportunities to engage with their teachers about books and strengthened teacher-student relationships. By discussing books and browsing through the reading lists, students were introduced to a variety of classic and intriguing reads.

The book fayre and reading challenge offered students more than just a fun experience—it broadened their reading habits and perspectives:
May L (Y13) :
" Through this book fair, I got in touch some book genres that I wouldn't normally read, such as biographies. This allowed me to learn about the first-person narrative writing style, which made me more immersed in reading and feel as if I were experiencing the same things as the author.”
Raven W (Y11) :
"I used to consider reading in English as a little bit too tough and boring for me. But once I gave it a shot, I realized I was really into the book itself and forgot all about the language when reading books that I was interested in. I learned that sometimes trying a new thing is not as difficult as you might think, and you just need courage to take the first step."
Tiffany Z (Y10) :
"Actually, I want to say that I enhanced my patience and knowledge by participating in this challenge, which means that it is simple but necessary for us to read every single day."
This year's book fayre was not only an opportunity to discover new books but also a chance for students and teachers to engage in meaningful discussions around literature and develop a deeper understanding and passion for reading. Whether it was the fun of solving riddles or guessing their teacher’s favourite book, the event provided a platform for students to connect, grow, and share through a love of reading, making it an integral part of school life.
