Carl is in the top 10% GPA in Year 13. He is good at science and engineering and has won all kinds of academic competition awards. Carl also has an extreme passion for fencing.

When it comes to Duke University, many people say it is the "Harvard of the South". While it is not part of the Ivy League, it still ranks among the top 10 academic institutions in the United States and is one of the top universities in the world. Carl told us that because of this, he didn't have much confidence in being accepted by Duke University until he received the offer.

"At that time, I also went through the college list and found that there were very few schools with outstanding science and engineering as well as a fencing team. When I decided on it, I looked at other schools, and I couldn't choose any other school, so I applied for it." Duke University is the most suitable campus for Carl, who studies science and engineering and regards fencing as a "necessity" of life.

The excellent ranking of Duke university was not the thing that attracted him. Carl told us that Duke University's emphasis on Sports in campus culture and campus values made a great impression on him. There are many kinds of sports for students to choose, as well as other rich benefits that college students can enjoy. He is eager to spend his university life at this prestigious university with excellent academic results and a solid sports culture.

Looking back on the day when he received his offer, Carl said: "when I saw the result of the admission, I roared. I had been lying around at home all day and I was so happy that I didn't want to do anything."

Carl told us that, although he has participated in Euclid mathematics competitions, won the UKMT Senior Mathematics Competition Gold Award, Duke of Edinburgh Award and other awards, he knows that his competitiveness in scientific research competition is not as outstanding as many other applicants in the same period. Because, while many students around him were doing background promotion activities related to University applications, he was Fencing. "Everyone likes different things. As far as I am concerned, I can't give up my hobby, so I don't think much about whether it is conducive to applying for University. I just insist on doing it."

As a result, Carl spent a lot of time showcasing his fencing skills in his personal statement. From his athletic figure to his attitude to training to the growing experience and the perception of life brought by fencing, he wrote a convincing three-dimensional picture with words that moved the admissions officer.

2  Carl’s passion for fencing is not confused and scattered, but diligent and focused.

Celeste Ng, a Chinese American writer, once wrote this sentence in the novel Everything I Never Told You: "we should get rid of the expectations of others and find our true selves all our lives." Carl has begun to find his true self.

2

Carl's self-discipline is also amazing. If we were to divide his high school life like cutting a cake, the two giant slices would be academic courses and fencing.

Academically, he majored in computers, mathematics, advanced mathematics, physics and economics. Carl is particularly interested in computing. Last summer, he signed up for Stanford's "online" summer school to study discrete mathematics and programming. Carl told us that during this eight-week summer school activity, he studied for eight or nine hours almost every day. This period of high intensity and great concentration gave him a solid understanding of both the theory and practice of programming.

3

In addition, when he was 10 years old, Carl was already an "old athlete" in the fencing field. He won the second place in the men's foil competition of Jiangsu Province in 2018, the third place in the 17-year-old boys' foil competition of China fencing Federation in 2018, and the first place in the boys' foil competition of International Youth Fencing in 2019.

4

While it is a great honour to win medals, it also takes hard work to win them: Physical training, endurance training, mechanical training and frequent competitions. His life is filled with fencing. He often needs time to rest in order to balance schoolwork with training. But he still enjoys his hobby.

3  He grew up in an open environment

Recently, during an interview with Sarah, the new foreign director of Dulwich International High School Suzhou (click here for more information) Sarah said that education itself cannot be quantified by using a system of academic courses. The purpose of education is to cultivate students' comprehensive ability, and their comprehensive competitiveness needs to be realized through both academic courses and Co-curricular activities. The two complement each other and are indispensable.

When a person has a continuous interest in learning and learning ability, they can continue to make progress at University, work and even long-term life. Every child has unlimited possibilities.

At Dulwich International High School Suzhou, children are encouraged to "make their ideas come true" The "sparks" from the students are quite wonderful. As a representative on the student council and the team leader of fan house (one of the four houses of Dulwich International High School Suzhou), Carl and his classmates recently launched a new challenge - planning a variety show that observes the daily life of our students.

From program planning to role-playing, then filming ideas and interview editing, Carl and his classmates explored step by step. It took a month to complete the first issue of the program about "overcoming procrastination". As soon as the work was broadcast in the school, it was highly praised by everyone and there is a great demand for the next episode!

Carl told us that it will be a long time before he enters Duke University. At present, he is in the process of looking for goals for himself: "it is essential to keep academic achievements and continue physical training. But next, I also want to do something else, for example, to find a company internship, to find a direction for future majors; or to read more books. After all, my future classmates are probably very good, so I have to prepare in advance. "

The children at our school and all individuals. Carl, who is outstanding in both academics and his hobby and ability, provides clear proof of this.
