What A Wonderful CISSMUN Trip

Recently a group of our students and teachers went to attended the CISSMUN in Shanghai, Amanda L, our Y13 student wrote a recap article of the trip, we are now sharing it with you.

“A United Nations that will not stand up for human rights is a United Nations that cannot stand up for itself” This beautiful quote from Kofi Annan is the first thing that comes to mind when I heard the theme of CISSMUN XII: reclaiming the future.

This year, a group of 19 delegates from DHSZ led by Lawrence Z and Max Battended this annual conference alongside our amazing teachers Ms. Xu, Ms. Law, and Mr. Winton.

Our MUN CCA had a wonderful 3-day trip filled with fascinating debates on diplomacy, exhilarating discussions regarding pressing world issues, and a chance to collaborate with international students from all over the country.

Before getting in the bus, the group already buzzed with excitement and the anticipation felt tangible. It had been 3 years since our school was allowed to go to an MUN conference and this may be the first chance for many new students and the last for Y13s like me.

Being one of the most recognized conferences in China, CISSMUN did not fail to deliver. With an extremely experienced secretariat team, well trained staff, and amazing art and promo group, every participant felt very well taken care of.

For enrichment, CISSMUN invited their amazing Chamber String orchestra and a politics, philosophy, and economics professor from Duke Kunshan University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University to discuss the topic of rights to natural resources and their conservation.

In our school, we had students participated in every single committee including two students delegating P5 nations in the security council, which is the most selective committee. The younger students from Y10 and Y11 did an especially phenomenal job, professionally handling their debate and resolution merging at a conference of such high echelon. It was truly wonderful to see them learn and grow in MUN.

In this process, all of us did research on the countries and topics we were interested in, drafted resolutions, made numerous speeches, and some even wrote amendments. We had the opportunity to explore the local food around our hotel and form amazing friendships along the way.

My favourite part of the conference was the crisis problem thrown at us spontaneously. None of us knew it was coming, but the entire house came to like instantly. We began to work collectively to de-escalate the issue at hand while debating on our original topic as well.

Overall, this was probably my favourite conference in my 7 years of MUN experience and I can’t really think of a better way to end my MUN journey!

I sincerely hope that DHSZ-MUN will continue to flourish in the future!
