10th Campus+ China Summit
Recently, Mr Simon Johnston, our Assistant Head (Boarding), was invited to the “Corridor of Insights” 10th Campus+ China Summit, hosted by Noppen Group. During the event, Mr Johnston shared DHSZ’s unique approach to academic success and student development, emphasizing the importance of balancing academic achievement with emotional well-being and personal growth.
In his presentation, Mr Johnston explored how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Simon Sinek’s leadership theories play essential roles in fostering student success. He emphasized that students can only achieve self-actualization and academic excellence if their fundamental needs—such as safety, belonging, and emotional well-being—are fulfilled.
“At DHSZ, we believe students can truly thrive only when they feel safe and supported,” Mr Johnston stated. “Emotional well-being and academic success are not in conflict but work hand-in-hand.”
Mr Johnston went on to introduce the EiM Well-being Framework (click to read more), which DHSZ uses to foster a strong sense of belonging and support within the school community. He explained: “In our boarding program, we focus on building trust and meaningful relationships. This supportive environment not only enhances students' engagement and motivation but also lays the foundation for their future academic and career success.”
Mr Johnston also discussed how DHSZ leverages data-driven, personalized learning to maximize student outcomes. He emphasized that understanding students as individuals and tailoring learning opportunities to their specific needs are what set DHSZ apart. This holistic approach ensures that students thrive both academically and personally, preparing them not only for outstanding academic performance but also for future success in university applications and career development.
“Our strength lies not only in academic rigor but in the deep relationships we build with students. These connections inspire students to pursue both academic excellence and personal growth.”
Reflecting on the summit, Mr Johnston expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to share DHSZ’s success with educational leaders from Shanghai, Suzhou, and across China. He looks forward to future collaborations to advance education and promote student well-being.
