Global Applications: A Comprehensive Introduction

An increasing number of students are choosing to apply to universities from multiple countries. However, many parents and students feel confused by the various application processes, tuition fees, living expenses, and other factors involved. Today, the Department of Counselling will provide a detailed introduction to the application situations in popular countries and regions worldwide, helping you better plan your study abroad journey.

European University Applications

1.Language of Instruction and Daily Life

Countries like Ireland, the Netherlands, and some Eastern European countries offer programs taught in English, making them popular among international students. However, it's important to note that while the language of instruction may be English, the local language is different. For example, Dutch is the most common language in daily life in the Netherlands. This means that even if you can communicate in English at school, you may need to acquire some proficiency in the local language for everyday activities.

2. Tuition and Living Costs

European universities attract many students due to their diverse educational systems and relatively low tuition fees. For instance, in the Netherlands, international undergraduate tuition ranges from approximately €8,000 to €15,000 per year. Most universities in the Netherlands do not provide on-campus accommodation though, meaning students must find their own apartments, which can be a challenge.

3. Private Universities

Some private universities, such as the EHL, a hotel management school in Switzerland, and Istituto Marangoni, fashion school in Italy and France, charge tuition fees comparable to those of universities in the UK and the US. However, their specialized programs enjoy global prestige and continue to attract many students.

Universities in Canada, Australia, HK China, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea

Canada, Australia, and Singapore are also popular choices for our school's students. However, it is important to note that admission to public universities in Singapore is highly competitive, and they are not a safety option for all students. Some universities require ACT/SAT scores for admission (specific details can be consulted with respective guidance counselors).

Many world-renowned institutions have established campuses in Asia, such as:

UK University Applications

The UK remains a key application destination each year, housing numerous world-class universities. Some universities require students to take additional entrance tests, such as the TMUA, which is a prerequisite for mathematics and computer science programs at universities like University of Cambridge, Imperial College, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Additionally, medical programs typically require interviews, while art students need to prepare a portfolio.

US University Applications

During the Parent Academy event, our counsellors shared valuable information regarding US university applications, including the differences between ED (Early Decision), EA (Early Action), and RD (Regular Decision) applications, as well as various factors influencing admission. Understanding these details can help students better plan their application timelines and enhance their chances of acceptance.

After the Parent Academy, parents and their children can visit Dulwich College to attend the university fair, where they can consult face-to-face with Universally Admissions Officers from various universities to gain more specific information about applications.

The overseas university application process is complex, involving many cultural, linguistic, and lifestyle factors across different countries and regions.
