DHSZ Open Class Ep.12 Igniting Passion in DHSZ Maths Class

Welcome back to our open class series. On this day last year, we first explored the DHSZ Mathematics Class and saw how interactive the lesson was. A year later, we step into the mathematics classroom once again to see how Mr Yusuf Csabai tailors his teaching and helps students overcome language barriers to truly understand the beauty of mathematics.

What is the Class About?

In the classroom, Mr Csabai first deepened students' understanding of the objective line method by having them solve a vivid real-life problem. Following this was a comprehensive exploration of the vertex-testing method, enabling students to find solutions to optimisation problems. He believes that this approach helps students connect the dots of knowledge, stating, "Our intention is to showcase how the Mathematics Department at DHSZ provides outstanding support to students and engage them effectively."

At DHSZ, the mathematics department fosters a dynamic learning environment, igniting students' curiosity and mathematical potential. Mr Csabai employs innovative teaching methods, integrating real-world applications and providing personalized support to students, enabling them to build a deep understanding of the beauty and practicality of mathematics. Teachers not only aim to equip students with mathematical concepts but also prioritize nurturing their problem-solving abilities, instilling confidence to face global challenges and cultivating lifelong learners. Mr Csabai aspires to lead students in exploring the world of mathematics with enthusiasm, resilience, and a global perspective.

Teaching Style

Mr Csabai breaks down complex mathematical concepts into easily understandable parts for diverse classes and ensure that every EAL (English as an Additional Language) student comprehends them fully. Each lesson starts with a familiar problem to review prior knowledge, clarify course objectives, and help students grasp the purpose and relevance of new mathematical methods. He uses visual aids, real-world examples, and translations of key mathematical terms into accessible language to scaffold understanding for EAL learners.

"Involving the whole class in collaborative activities to solve problems, we create a supportive environment to encourage active student participation and foster a sense of belonging. Recognising the diversity of learning styles within the class, we adopt various teaching modalities," says Mr Csabai. He believes that students are diverse learners, with visual learners benefiting from the use of charts, dynamic math software, and PowerPoint animations for more intuitive understanding. Auditory learners require clear explanations, while kinesthetic learners benefit from hands-on problem-solving.

Education Philosophy

Mr Csabai believes that learning mathematics is not just about filling the mind with information but igniting a passion for discovery and understanding. He told us that his teaching strategies align with Plutarch’s wisdom, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” He strives to spark students' curiosity, foster critical thinking skills, and inspire their love for learning mathematics. By emphasising continuous exploration, problem-solving, and real-world connections, Mr Csabai's goal is not only to help students excel in mathematics but also to benefit them throughout their lives.

Advice from Mr Csabai

Mr Csabai’s advice to students who want to learn mathematics better is to approach it with curiosity and resilience. “Don't view it as a mere set of problems to solve, but as a journey of exploration and discovery. Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow and develop problem-solving skills. Seek connections between concepts, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Remember, the joy of mathematics lies not just in finding answers but in the process of understanding and solving problems. Stay curious, stay persistent, and enjoy the journey of mastering the language of numbers and patterns at DHSZ.”
