Beyond Borders: Experiences at SHASMUN
The MUN event at Shanghai American School, held from the 17th to the 19th of Friday, brought together 21 students from Year 11, Year 12, and Year 13, accompanied by dedicated teachers Ms Anna Xu, Mr Tony Winton, and Ms Ibtisam Allie. It was truly inspiring to witness these students, fresh from completing major exams, leave school on the same day to embark on this enriching journey in Shanghai.
The conference's central theme, "The Footnote of History," highlights the significance of overlooked or underestimated events. It emphasizes the importance of avoiding the dismissal of the past and recognizing how seemingly minor details can shape major historical events. Today's actions become the footnotes of tomorrow, leading to pivotal changes. By reassessing neglected events, we gain a deeper understanding and work towards preventing their recurrence. Approaching history with an open mind is crucial, as seemingly insignificant matters can have a profound impact on shaping the future.

Attending SHASMUN, my first Model UN conference, was a transformative journey. Armed with a tentative speech and an incomplete resolution, I stepped in nervously, yet curiosity fueled my every move. But after two days of intense debates and negotiations, I emerged with a profound understanding of UN operations and priceless diplomacy skills. Pride surged through me as I beheld my newfound knowledge.
Yet, amidst the triumphs, a significant challenge arose - a conflict between my personal beliefs and the position of the government of a particular country I was representing. Determined, I delved into this country's history and political structure, immersing myself in research throughout the night. Armed with this profound understanding, I convincingly portrayed the role of the country's diplomat the next day.
Undoubtedly, this MUN conference unraveled a world of global affairs, fortifying my grasp on political powers, refining my formal English proficiency, and forging connections with extraordinary peers. The sense of achievement and fulfillment it bestowed upon me was truly unparalleled.

Break times were enlivened by delegates singing songs, while our chairs fostered an atmosphere of perpetual engagement.
