#From the Students - UC Journey
Carrie H
UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego
Carrie has received offers from the University of California, Irvine; the University of California, Davis; the University of California, Santa Barbara; and the University of California, San Diego. Her decision to pursue the UC system stems from three key factors: firstly, its world-class academic resources—through distinguished faculty, she can freely explore interdisciplinary courses spanning literature and philosophy alongside her economics major; secondly, the abundant professional opportunities via internships and research programmes, which provide flexibility for both academic and career pathways; thirdly, California’s exceptional quality of life, offering an ideal balance between academic rigour and coastal serenity. Notably, the UC system’s streamlined "single-application-for-multiple-campuses" model significantly simplified the application process.
Regarding her application journey, Carrie emphasises the comprehensive support from DHSZ as pivotal. Mr Steve Hodgkin strategised credit accumulation through Marquette courses, strengthening her academic profile. The UC admissions officer session in school proved invaluable: she learned that she didn't need to take IELTS, and through direct conversation with the admissions officers, she obtained a great deal of key information that is not accessible on their official website. When navigating UC’s intricate application portal, Ms Serena Shi, her counsellor, provided targeted technical guidance to avoid mistakes. This support—strategic planning, exclusive resource access, and procedural precision—formed the cornerstone of her successful multi-campus applications.
James Y
UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz
During his application to the University of California, James received offers from both UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz. He chose to apply primarily because of California’s pleasant climate and unique natural environment, further enhanced by the fact that many of his friends had also selected these institutions, adding a sense of familiarity for future alumni. Moreover, his strong interest in agriculture led him to UC Davis, whose outstanding programme in agricultural technology particularly appealed to him. James recalled that although the application process was demanding—especially the extensive effort required to brainstorm and refine his personal statements—it proved extremely rewarding, underscoring the importance of early planning and continual self-improvement.
Throughout his preparation, James said that DHSZ provided comprehensive support. Its rich array of co-curricular activities, such as football training and volunteering at hospitals, furnished him with abundant material for his personal statements. He also mentioned that our school encouraged him to step out of his comfort zone by seizing opportunities like successfully running for the position of Deputy Head Student of the student council, an experience that boosted his self-confidence and strengthened his application. Finally, his counsellor, Ms Li Ren, offered invaluable guidance in selecting a suitable field of study, helping him to bridge his background in geography with his passion for agricultural technology.
Reasons for DHSZ Applicants' Success
- Academics are key – particularly IGCSE and AS exams. Successful students are doing well in a range of courses.
- Test-blind (SAT/ACT) admissions can be an advantage for strong students who have not tested.
- Activity lists and essays allow students to show their academic curiosity and extracurriculars.
How does DHSZ Support Students
- Essay and list support from Year 12;
- Working through the UC application in the fall of year 13 – focusing on students presenting themselves in the best light;
- It all comes back to students' performance in classes and opportunities for extracurriculars.
